About Lenhok’sin High Adventure
Exciting high adventure opportunities you will enjoy and remember forever.
Lenhok’sin High Adventure is a backpacking and canoeing trek camp. With a “plan your own adventure” option, each crew is able to personally tailor their itinerary to fit their level of experience and goals. Backpack through the 4,000+ acres of the Goshen Scout Reservation and the 35,000 acres of surrounding state wildlife game lands. Navigate the rapids of the James River in a whitewater canoe. Challenge your Crew to summit the five mountain peaks and earn awards along the way. Lenhok’sin is an opportunity for challenge, excitement, and growth for all scouts and scouters.

Treks
All treks have 5 days and 4 nights on the trail and/or river. Crews arrive at Camp Baird base camp on Sunday, with a Monday arrival option for LDS units, and depart on the following Saturday. We provide the food and have a variety of awards for your crew to achieve.
Lenhok’sin Trail Trek
As our main attraction and primary program, this trek focuses on backpacking through the 4,000+ acres of Goshen Scout Reservation and 35,000 acres of surrounding state game lands.
Crews will spend five days and four nights on the trail and will have an opportunity to visit up to four of our staffed outposts or other exciting activities.
Crews fill out a survey prior to arriving at camp. We design Crew itineraries based on the interest in certain outposts and award opportunities as indicated by the Crew. Itineraries can fit a wide range of Crew abilities, from experienced backpackers to those who have only been a few times before.
James River Canoe Trek
Paddle down one of Virginia’s most scenic rivers, the James River, on a 5 day, 4 night canoeing trek. Experience 61 miles of the historic upper James River in Virginia from the headwaters at Iron Gate to the Snowden Dam. Navigate over 100 Class I rapids, 20 challenging Class II rapids, and the infamous Balcony Falls rapid. Bring your fishing pole and pick up dinner along the way. Camp nightly at wilderness riverside locations. Add an optional river clean up service project to work towards your River Trek and 50 Miler Awards.
All medical checks and swim tests will be conducted at Base Camp. We will outfit you with food and see to it that you are ready to hit the river on Monday.

Awards
Lenhok’sin High Adventure Patch
Awarded to those who complete a trek at Lenhok’sin High Adventure. Neither sold nor given to anyone who hasn’t earned it.
Trailblazer Award
To recognize those crews choosing to make the most of their week on the trail by showing extra effort.
Wilderness Award
An award for those crews that really want to get out there and away from everything.
Big Butt Award
Big Butt is our toughest climb, not for the weak of heart. We’re not kidding. That really is the mountain’s name.
Moore Four Peaks Award
Named after Sam Moore, in honor of his years of maintenance of the trails. To be worthy of this award, crews must climb all four peaks: Viewing Rock, Jump Rock, Forge Rock, and Big Butt.
50 Miler Award
An official BSA award earned by those who display personal fitness, self-reliance, knowledge of wood lore, and a practical understanding of conservation.
Duty to God Award
The Goshen Scout Reservation religious award.
River Trek Award
Similar to the Trailblazer Award, the River Trek award is presented to the crews who demonstrate safety afloat and practice wilderness ethics.
Outposts & Activities
Aquatics
Spend the afternoon paddling around the beautiful Lake Merriweather on a Stand Up Paddle Board or kayak. Take in the breathtaking views and navigate the coastline.
Caving
Travel to new depths as you spend hours exploring an expansive cave system.
COPE High Elements
Soar above the trees as you take a leap of faith and balance high above the ground. Grow as a team as you navigate Goshen Scout Reservation’s low and high elements.
Foxfire
Venture into an early 1900s Appalachian blacksmithing forge as you create knives, hooks, and other creations.
Mountain Man
Shoot black powder rifles, throw tomahawks, and trade with fur trappers from the 1830s as they blaze their way westward.
Primitive
Discover the wilderness with your Crew on your way to beautiful views. Hike to the farthest peaks and reconnect as a unit as you reach your goals in this unstaffed experience.
Wood’s Edge
Test your proficiency in archery, dagger throwing, and survivalist skills at this medieval homestead.
Special Program: Provisional Trail Trek
The NCAC High Adventure Committee is sponsoring a Provisional Crew for the Trail Trek.
Hike the trails, visit the outposts, and spend the week with other adventure lovers. This crew is for individual Venturers and Scouts, 13 by September 1, 2025. Contact information for the High Adventure Committee is available on the event page, via the Register page below.

Meet Your 2024 Camp Director
Dan Leichtling
This is Daniel’s 19th summer at Goshen and 5th at Lenhok’sin. He started as a junior staffer at Camp PMI in 2006 and earned his Eagle Scout in 2008. Earning an Associate Degree at Montgomery College and then a BA in History at University of Maryland, College Park, he has spent the last few years working as a substitute teacher when not trekking and teaching Scouts at Goshen. He is most looking forward to assembling and preparing an amazing staff that can provide Troops and Crews with an outstanding experience on the trail.

Availability indicates if new units are able to register for a specific week of camp. If your unit has already reserved a week at camp then your Goshen coordinator will be able to add campers as space allows.

Wildlife
There is a wide variety of wildlife at Goshen Scout Reservation. We’ve got many different species of reptiles and amphibians. There are also a number of birds, from your regular sparrows to turkeys, hawks, and eagles. We have what we call mini-bears (skunks, foxes, raccoons, etc.) and actual black bears.
Both to ensure our safety and to preserve the wonder of our bit of wilderness, it is important to understand how to interact with the wildlife around us.
No Food in Tents
When on the trail, remember to follow the bear-muda triangle. Keep your eating and cooking area separate from your tent. Hang a bear bag with all smellables overnight or if you are going to be away from your packs for an extended period of time.
What to Do When You See Wildlife
If you see a bear or any injured wildlife, or if there is any wildlife interfering or otherwise negatively impacting your stay, mark its location on your map. Let Camp Staff know when you reach your next outpost or let the Staff at any base camp Admin building know. See any cool wildlife? If you can, take a picture of it and share it with us on Facebook or Instagram when you get home!
Transportation
Units may take advantage of the Goshen bus system chartered by our local council.
